Overview
Established in 1914, St. Helen Catholic School provides a coeducational academic program for students ages 3-14. The school is accredited by the North Central Association of Schools, by the Illinois State Board of Education, and by the Chicago Archdiocese. The preschool program is accredited through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
Educational Program
Our preschool/kindergarten program is designed in keeping with extensive research that indicates that young children learn best through play. Structured and unstructured activities promote children’s social, cognitive, language, emotional, and physical development. Basic mathematical concepts (including fractions and space relationships), temperature, time, and monetary values are among the topics explored through hands-on activities and written materials alike.
Students in grades K-8 receive instruction in a solid core of language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and religion. The curriculum is aligned to state as well as Chicago Archdiocese standards. The curriculum nurtures creative, critical, and independent thinking skills as well as self-discipline. It is structured so that students receive differentiated instruction that meets their developmental needs. Best practice methods are integrated throughout the curriculum.
Special classes in Physical Education, Music, and Technology are taught to grades Preschool-8. Students in grades preschool-5 receive enrichment Art and Spanish classes.
All students also rehearse for and perform in an annual Christmas production. Tutoring and counseling are offered on a need basis to promote student success and self-confidence.
Extra-Curricular Activities
Students learn teamwork and good sportsmanship through a soccer program for grades K-6 and basketball for grades 4-8. Private piano lessons are available during regular school hours.
Teachers
The dedicated teachers at St. Helen School average ten years of experience and a Master's Degree in Education. Professional Development is ongoing at the graduate school level. In 2007, one third of the faculty was enrolled in a graduate school program to earn either their first or second Master's Degree. The Principal is an adjunct professor in the Graduate School of Education at Dominican University.
