Back in Session!!!

Hello, everybody! We are finally back in session!

Registration is now officially closed for basketball, soccer and volleyball.

SOCCER
This week we started practice for soccer and Saturday is our first day of games. You can view the schedule of games at:

<a href="http://www.sthelenchicago.org/CMS/documents/CSA_2006_U10_and_U8_Schedule.pdf" target="_blank">http://www.sthelenchicago.org/CMS/documents/CSA_2006_U10_and_U8_Schedule.pdf</a>

We have two Under 8 teams and one Under 10 (though we may split them up). The numbers of registrants and coaches just didn’t make it for us to have Under 12 and/or Under 15 girls/boys teams. We needed a minimum of 15 players per group and we only had 11 in each. Let’s hope for next year…

The Under 10 Knights practice on Tuesday, from 3:00 to 4:15 in the gym and on Thursday, from 3:15 to 4:30 at Smith Park. (Coaches: Mr. Conner and Ms. Medina)

The Under 8 Quicksilver practice on Wednesday, from 3:00 to 4:15 in the gym. (Coaches: Mr. Noah and Mrs. Sheri Khan)

The Under 8 Fire practice on Thursday, from 3:00 to 4:15 in the gym. (Coach: Mr. Ferme)

BASKETBALL
Mr. Berg met with the NCPL director and signed up St. Helen for two 4th and 5th grade teams (boys and girls), two 6th grade teams (boys and girls) and two 7th and 8th grade teams (boys and girls). The Big 10 League still hasn’t had a meeting, though it is likely forthcoming.

This year we have one more team (6th grade boys) than last year. Because of this, we need to make some temporary adjustments to the practice schedule to fit everyone in, until soccer is over. We are asking that teams who want to start practice right away (next week) practice in the following time brackets:

-          from 4:30 to 5:30;
-          from 5:45 to 6:45;
-          from 7:00 to 8:00 or later.

This schedule is valid for basketball until the first week of November, when soccer practices end.

3rd grade players who signed up will be able to practice (pending coaches’ approval) with 4th and 5th graders but not play.

VOLLEYBALL

This year, we opened registration for volleyball, and the response from the St. Helen girls has been overwhelming! (Only two boys registered, one of which in first grade!)

Thanks to all the volunteer coaches who make our sports program possible!

No Under 12 and Under 15 Soccer This Year...

E-mail Print PDF

Because of low registration (only 11 boys and 11 girls) this year St. Helen won't participate in Under 12 and Under 15 soccer tournaments.

We hope for higher turnout next year.

Under 8 and Under 10 flyers went out on Wednesday, September 20th to the families of registered children. Practice for soccer starts on the week of the 25, and the first friendly games will take place on Saturday, September 30.

We still don't have a Under 12 Soccer Coach for the boys team. If you know anyone interested in the job, please call Mr. Ferme at 773.726.4737.

Friday, September 8th is the deadline for soccer registration! Hurry up!

If you are interested in helping out coaching our basketball and soccer teams, please contact Mr. Berg (through the School Office) or Mr. Ferme (773.726.4737 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ).

St. Helen School has an excellent sports program. It has always been staffed by parents and community members who generously donate a few hours a week to train our children. Last year 132 students registered in soccer (73) and basketball (59) at St. Helen. We would like to keep the sports program at these levels, but we can’t do it without help from volunteer coaches.

Coaching at St. Helen School is a very rewarding experience and gives our children an opportunity to develop physically and socially in a familiar environment. Please consider helping out this year. If you don’t feel you have the sports skills, consider helping as an assistant coach.

Mr. Ferme will be available at the Open House for both athlete registration and questions about coaching.
