Welcome to St. Helen School

"We believe that it is a child's right to be educated in a nurturing and safe environment."

St. Helen Catholic School strives to educate the whole child.  In doing so, a spiritual, academic, and social foundation is created. This formation, rooted in Gospel values, enables the graduate to develop as a responsible Christian citizen.

We believe that it is a child's right to be educated in a nurturing and safe environment.

Daily activities encourage the sense of positive self-esteem as well as the development of self-discipline.

We unite for racial justice and celebrate cultural diversity.

We promote active service to the school, parish, and community.

Opened in the fall of 1914, St. Helen is currently in the midst of celebrating it's centennial history. Located in Chicago's Historic Ukrainian Village, St. Helen School is a cornerstone of a thriving and successful community.

St. Helen Catholic School and Parish have a long and storied history.  Founded in the early 20th Century, the school has stood through 17 presidencies, 2 World Wars, and countless other historical milestones. The school has adapted and thrived through 100 years of history and looks forward to many, many more.

Here at St. Helen Catholic School we hope to continue the tradition of excellence established over a century ago.  Improving student access to technology and cutting edge teaching tools has been, and will remain, a priority for our school.  A formula of tried and true teaching methods combined with a committment to the future of learning tools will keep St. Helen School a place where students can navigate  the long road to academic excellence.

Principal's Message

Hello and welcome to the St. Helen School.

We are delighted you are considering our school for your child. Since opening in 1913, we have been an anchor in Ukrainian Village-West Town, educating generations of students from a variety of neighborhoods and backgrounds. Through the years, we have been committed to academic excellence in a faith filled environment with an emphasis on diversity and inclusion.

Two things in particular stand out about St. Helen School: our diversity and the sense of community.  It is these qualities that draw families to us and make them stay.  Our students represent many cultural traditions and several faith traditions.  All are welcome at St Helen.  We believe that every child is a gift from God, and our community is enriched by our different backgrounds, experiences, languages, and stories.

Our curriculum at St. Helen School includes math, science, religion, social studies and language arts.  Students also take part in technology, foreign language, PE, art and music classes.  We believe a well rounded curriculum of core subjects balanced with fine arts, technology, and PE gives our students an education that will prepare them for their future, whatever that may be.  Our students attend weekly mass and participate in service projects as well.  Social justice and faith in action is an integral part of the community at St. Helen School.

Our students have opportunities to take part in after school clubs and sports: this year our cross country team qualified for the State Meet in Normal, Illinois!  We also offer choir and piano lessons for our musical students.  These extracurriculars are an essential part of building community at St. Helen School, and we are glad so many of our students participate!

Parents have many opportunities to get involved and support the St. Helen community.  We have an active Dad’s Club, a highly engaged Mom’s Club, monthly parent meetings with the principal, and several social events throughout the year, such as a Thanksgiving Pot Luck, a Christmas Fair, and a STEM Step 5K Run.  These traditions are an important part of keeping the community spirit alive here at St. Helen.

Please take a moment to watch the videos on our website, check out our Facebook page, and schedule a tour of our school.  We can’t wait to welcome you to the St Helen Family!
